The Humane Society Of The United States.
Most people have a perception of the humane society of the united states as being an organization that has many animals which are waiting for people to adopt. While the part of the HSUS’s work is to support the local animal shelters, the work it does encompasses more than that. The simple words that are used to illustrate the complex work of the organization is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
Thousnds of species exist today in the world today. The main objective of the HSUS is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. The organization works globally not just in the United States and has been involved in work to save animals found deep in the Ocean. Some of the animals the organization has participated in rescuing have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. The activities that the animals are involved are many and these are some of them.
Another major work f the HSUS is to work with the pet owners at home and also providing support to various local animal shelters through the utilization of the various animal professionals which it has. HSUS has been a leading organization in lobbying for laws related to animals both locally and internally. The laws that the organization has been lobbying are meant to ensure that animal cruelty has been eliminated. When disasters such as the Katrina have occurred, animals are always affected. In such scenarios the HSUS is always ready to travel in the area to help in the rescue mission of the animals. The HSUS has programs that ensures that home owners are educated about the backyard animals such as squirrels.
The history of animal welfare organizations has a long history and started way before HSUS was founded. The Society for the prevention of cruelty of animals is the first known organization know to advocate for animal rights in the U.S. This was the first organization to advocate for animal rights. More other organizations came up. Follwing a delegates which was carried out in 1887, the delegates agreed the organizations to come together and form the American Humane Association. The disagreements among some members led to some of the leaving and forming HSUS.
The main goal of the HSUS was to ensure that all types of animal cruelty are eliminated in the whole world. The first legislation which it pushed was the removal of the law that required shelters to turn over animals to be used in research work. The organization has led to passing of many laws that protect animals. The wide variety of legislation range from those that protect species which are endangered to those that condemn inhuman treatment of animals.
